Neuroscience, Emotion Systems,
and Decision-Making

This page is about the much bigger role emotions have of decision-making than previously thought.

The Science of Emotion

Paul Ekman

Basic Emotions Theory

  • Used by CIA and FBI for detecting deception via micro-expressions

  • Validated across cultures through facial expression recognition studies

  • Lacks direct neuroscientific validation, focusing primarily on observable behavior

Validation

Face imagery tests of 1,000s of people across many cultures reveal a strong correlation of facial expressions and underlying emotions. Here is a rudimentary example.

Jaak Panksepp

Affective Neuroscience

  • Systems-thinking approach, mapping seven core emotional circuits in the brain

  • Validated by hard science, using brain imaging, neurochemistry, and deep-brain stimulation

  • Lacks widespread practical applications in behavioral fields due to its cross-disciplinary nature

Validation

Affective neuroscience is being used scientifically validate different personality systems.  In this case, its the OCEAN model.  There are very high correlations to behaviors in various situations.

Affective Neuroscience

Affective neuroscience studies the neural mechanisms of emotions, focusing on brain structures like the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and limbic system. It explores how emotions shape cognition, behavior, and decision-making.

Affective neuroscience originated as a formal field in the late 20th century, with Jaak Panksepp recognized as its founder.

His pioneering work mapped the neural circuits underlying basic emotional systems in mammals, identifying seven primary emotional systems:

  • SEEKING,

  • RAGE,

  • FEAR,

  • LUST,

  • CARE,

  • PANIC/GRIEF,

  • and PLAY.

Panksepp’s research integrated neuroscience, psychology, and evolutionary biology, emphasizing that emotions are deeply rooted in subcortical brain structures, particularly the limbic system.

His book Affective Neuroscience: The Foundations of Human and Animal Emotions (1998) laid the groundwork for the field, influencing modern studies on the neural basis of emotions, empathy, and social bonding.

This diagram visualizes how each of Panksepp's seven emotional systems influences habit formation:

SEEKING (Exploration, Curiosity)

Creates habits driven by novelty-seeking, perseverance, and experimentation. This system drives us to explore, learn, and discover new patterns.

RAGE (Boundaries, Defense)

Forms habits related to quick decision-making, territorial behaviors, and assertiveness. These habits help establish and defend boundaries.

FEAR (Caution, Avoidance)

Develops risk-averse habits, over-planning, and safety behaviors. This system creates routines designed to minimize threats.

LUST (Desire, Attraction)

Establishes pleasure-seeking habits, novelty pursuit, and patterns focused on sensory gratification.

CARE (Empathy, Nurturing)

Encourages trust-building, support behaviors, and nurturing routines. These habits strengthen social bonds.

PANIC/GRIEF (Loss, Social Bonding)

Creates security patterns, attachment behaviors, and connection rituals that help maintain important relationships.

PLAY (Creativity, Social Learning)

Forms habits around experimentation, pattern-seeking, and spontaneity. These habits support learning through enjoyable activities.

Each emotional system creates a distinctive pattern in how habits are formed, maintained, and expressed. Understanding these connections can help with designing interventions for habit change by addressing the underlying emotional drivers.
